Summary

VomiThixa™ is an antiemetic medicine that contains ondansetron as an active ingredient. It is used in children to treat and prevent nausea and vomiting caused by stomach discomfort, surgery, cancer medicines (chemotherapy) or radiation therapy. It works by blocking a natural substance called serotonin in the brain that causes nausea and vomiting.

VomiThixa™ may cause side effects like constipation, headache, diarrhoea, etc. Do not use this medicine if your child is allergic to it. Consult your doctor if any symptoms persist.

VomiThixa™ is an effective medicine recommended for use in children to treat nausea and vomiting.

VomiThixa™ should be taken 30 minutes before the start of chemotherapy, 1-2 hours before the start of radiation therapy, or 1 hour before surgery. Measure the required amount of syrup and give it to your child. If your child vomits this medicine within one hour of taking it, give the same dose again.

VomiThixa™ should be used with caution if your child has any condition like liver disease, heart failure, electrolyte imbalance, stomach or intestine blockage disorders. Always make sure that VomiThixa™ is safe for your children to use.

Usage

What is it prescribed for?

  • Radiation induced nausea and vomiting

Radiation-induced nausea and vomiting (RINV) is a common side effect in cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. You may feel sick during, or for a short time after, radiotherapy treatment. VomiThixa™ is used to treat nausea and vomiting in children undergoing radiotherapy.

  • Chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is a common side-effect related to cancer treatment. This can be severe and distressing in children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. VomiThixa™ is used to treat nausea and vomiting caused during chemotherapy treatment.

  • Post operative nausea and vomiting

Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) describe nausea and vomiting that occurs immediately after the surgery which can also continue for a day or two. It can occur due to some medications like anaesthetics that are used during surgery. VomiThixa™ is used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by surgery in children.

When not to use?

  • Allergy

Do not give Ondansetron Hydrochloride Oral Solution I.P. if your child is allergic to it. Inform your doctor if your child has a history of allergy to this medicine. If you notice any symptoms such as a skin rash, itching/swelling anywhere on your body, dizziness, breathing difficulty, etc., seek medical attention immediately.

Electrolyte imbalances

VomiThixa™ should be used with caution if your child has low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood as it may cause serious side effects.

  • Intestinal obstruction

Use VomiThixa™ cautiously in children with intestinal obstruction diseases such as colon cancer, Crohn's disease or diverticulitis because this medicine can delay the time for food to move through the entire intestine (bowel transit time).

 

Dosage

Missed Dose

Ondansetron Hydrochloride Oral Solution I.P. is generally given as a single dose, hence the chances of missing a dose is very low. If your child is on a scheduled dosing regimen of this medicine, give the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.

Overdose

Never give more than the prescribed dose to your child. Seek emergency medical attention in case you suspect that you might have given an overdose of Ondansetron Hydrochloride Oral Solution I.P..

If your child has heart problems and is on medication, maintain caution while using VomiThixa™ as it may cause a heart rhythm problem called prolonged QT intervals (an electrical heartbeat disturbance). It may result in fast, rapid, and irregular heartbeats.

  • Liver Disease

The primary conversion of VomiThixa™ to its active form happens in the liver. Hence caution should be maintained if your child has liver disease. Please consult your doctor before using the medicine. Your doctor will also advise liver function tests (LFT) while your child is on treatment with VomiThixa™.

General Instructions

Give your child light foods before giving this medicine and also let your child drink more water to avoid dehydration while taking this medicine. Store this medicine at room temperature away from sunlight.

Keep the medicine out of reach of children. Discard the medicine if the seal of the medicine is open. Ensure that unused medicine is disposed of properly.
